Start Your Day Off Right With The Hour of Power

The morning is the most important time of the day. If you spend an hour a day to do these three things you will be happier in life, healthier, and more motivated than you’ve ever felt.

hour of powerI call this my hour of power. Every morning I wake up and I spend 60 minutes doing three things. They’ve helped contribute to a lot of my success.

So what is this Hour of Power exactly?

It’s a full hour that is broken up into three 20-minute sessions:

  • 20 minutes of exercise
  • 20 minutes of meditation
  • 20 minutes of reading (positive, uplifting material)

The benefits of doing just these 3 things are great.

The Benefits of the Hour of Power

1. Exercise

Simply by meditating you’ll make better decisions, have better mental health, energy, and focus. Reading something positive every day ensures that you are always learning and growing, along with increasing your focus. Exercise, even if you are taking a walk or stretching for 20 minutes will make a huge difference in your overall health and longevity.

You can switch the order of the 3 activities and you can also choose what hour of the day you’d like to reserve for your personal Hour of Power. I usually schedule my Hour of Power for the first hour I’m awake in the morning.  This really jumpstarts my day and allows me to feel energized, focused, and engaged.

And each day, I change my routine a tiny bit….One day I might exercise by taking a 20-minute walk around my neighborhood. The next day I might jog on the treadmill. Whatever type of exercise you choose to do is fine; what’s most important is that you commit to doing it!

2. Meditation

The same goes for the meditation portion of the hour.  There are so many amazing meditation resources out there for everyone.  I’ve created a free e-book on a 4-step meditation technique that is perfect for beginners. The most important thing is to find one that you feel connected to and spend 20 minutes really grounding yourself.  

And remember, you don’t need to be in a remote cave in India to meditate, although that would be pretty cool!  You can meditate almost anywhere….in your home, at a park, at the beach or a lake.  

Again, go with your internal guidance and find a place that you feel calm and present in, and use those 20 minutes to feed your mind, body, and soul.

3. Reading

And last but not least, the third portion of your Hour of Power is 20 minutes of reading.  Get your hands on positive, uplifting material – it could be from an online magazine, a book, journals or articles.  

But again, find something that excites you and that you’ll look forward to reading.  By reading positive material, your subconscious will become emerged in the affirmative, which helps you to remain in that positive state throughout the day.

I want to leave you with some homework after watching this video. I’d suggest test-driving the Hour of Power for 30 days. After 30 days, see what worked well and what didn’t. Try moving your hour to different times of the day.  Did having your Hour of Power in the morning work better for you than having it at night?

Remember, you can always change the terms of your hour. It is YOUR Hour of Power.

But have fun with it.  And know that it’s extremely effective in centering you, uplifting you, and helping you create a powerful, positive day.

Daily habits of gratitude and appreciation are one of the highest emotional states you can experience. When you cultivate gratitude, you’re able to feel true joy and contentment, no matter what you have or don’t have in your life.


“Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.” – Oprah Winfrey

The Law of Attraction states that like attracts like, when you’re grateful for what you already have, you will naturally attract more for which you can be grateful.

However, many people find that it requires great diligence to cultivate a persistent attitude of appreciation. That’s because we’ve been culturally conditioned to focus on what we don’t have, rather than appreciating what we’ve already received or achieved.

To help you combat this conditioning, here are 6 simple tips on how to make gratitude – one of the most important habits of successful people – a natural daily habit, so you can attract more joy and abundance into your life all year long:

1. Take 7 minutes each morning to write down everything you appreciate in life

Starting your day this way primes you to be receptive and grateful for everything your day will bring. It also helps you cultivate an air of positivity that makes you naturally more attractive to other positive people – and inspires them to want to help you achieve your goals.

2. Make a conscious effort to appreciate at least 3 people every day

By letting people know how much you appreciate them, you increase their own sense of appreciation and self-worth and encourage them to pay this positive energy forward to other people.

While most people enjoy receiving verbal appreciation, written notes are also nice because they can be saved and re-read. (For ideas on expressing appreciation, grab your copy of The Success Principles and review Principle 53: Practice Uncommon Appreciation.)

3. Play the appreciation game

Set a specific time each day to consciously appreciate everything you encounter. An ideal time to do this is on your way to or from work. Appreciate the people you pass, the road you walk on, the cars that let you merge into a different lane, the street signs that make it easy for you to know where you’re going, the rain that’s nourishing the plants and trees, and so on.

Look for the good in all situations – even those you would normally view as negative. As the saying goes, “Every cloud has a silver lining.” For example, when my wife was in a car accident a few years ago, she could have chosen to berate herself or question her judgment. Instead, she focused on her gratitude for suffering only minor injuries and for the help she received from other drivers.

4.  Carry a physical token of gratitude in your pocket, such as a heart-shaped stone, crystal, or some other small item

A physical reminder can bring you back to your daily habit practice of gratitude when your mind has drifted elsewhere. As you reach into your pocket throughout the day and feel the token, use it as a reminder to stop, breathe and take a moment to fully experience the emotion of gratitude. The more conscious effort you put into seeking it out, the easier it will be to find it – and the more powerful your experience will be.

5. Remember to appreciate the smallest blessings

The best way to activate your gratitude is by acknowledging the gifts most people take for granted. If you have food in your refrigerator, clothes in your closet and a roof over your head, you are better off than 75 percent of the world’s population.

If you eat three meals a day, you are far better off than the 1 billion people on the planet who eat once a day at most.

Do you have a phone?  How about a car that allows you to travel to work or to explore the country? Is your family healthy? Do you have a computer and Internet access to stay in touch with the world, get access to education, and perform work for which you are paid? Do you have clean water to drink?

Celebrate these simple blessings. These daily conveniences are gifts that most people in the world do not enjoy.

6. Appreciate yourself

Finally, don’t forget to appreciate your OWN positive qualities and accomplishments. In addition to celebrating your big successes, acknowledge your small daily successes too. We all need acknowledgment, but the most important acknowledgment is that which we give ourselves.

It may not feel natural at first to focus on appreciating what you already have, but by faithfully practicing the daily habits of gratitude outlined in this article, you’ll begin to change your conditioning.

To kick-start your daily gratitude practice, take a few moments to share at least three things for which you’re grateful for in the comments. Even the smallest act of gratitude will have a positive impact on your life.

The 4 Best Kept Secrets To Success & Happiness

People often ask me to share with them the basis of my own success.  I think the secret to success involves 4 things. Here they are:

1) Always Listen to Your Inner Guidance

First, I have always listened to my inner guidance. I listened to what I was interested in and pursued it with all of my heart and soul. I was always willing to let go of where I was literally and figuratively in order to follow my dreams and achieve my life goals.

By the time I was 39 I had lived in nine states, attended three universities, built three businesses, taken more than 100 workshops, read over 1,000 books, and listened to more audio programs than I can count. I have always been a voracious learner, and by honoring my desire to increase my own self-awareness, I also discovered ways to help others be more successful in every area of their lives.

You were born with an inner guidance system that tells you when you are on or off purpose by the amount of joy you are experiencing. The things that bring you the greatest joy are in alignment with your purpose.

Follow the things in your life that bring you the most joy, and dedicate yourself to always improving.

2) Work Hard and Passionately for What You Want

Second, I was willing to work hard. Because I was passionate about my work. I worked long hours, approached every task with excellence, and devoted myself to never-ending improvement in every area of my work and my life.

Whenever you set out to improve your skills, change your behavior, or better your family life or business, beginning in small, manageable steps gives you a greater chance of long-term success. Doing too much too fast not only overwhelms you (or anyone else involved in the improvement), it can doom the effort to failure—thereby reinforcing the belief that it’s difficult, if not impossible, to succeed.

When you start with small, achievable steps you can easily master, it reinforces your belief that you can easily improve.

3) Surround Yourself With Great People

Third, I learned early on that life is a team sport. I always surrounded myself with partners, co-authors, and great staff with whom I shared generously.

One of the main secrets of success and successful people is that they constantly seek out guidance and advice from experts in their field. You can do the same and find great partners and mentors. Set aside some time and make a list of the people you would like to ask to mentor you. Then approach them and ask for their help.

Be prepared to give your mentors something in return. Even if it’s something simple such as keeping them updated on industry information or calling with new opportunities that might benefit them, look for ways to give to your mentors. Help others, too. What a great reward to any mentor—to eventually have their former protégé out in the world mentoring others!

4) Love What You Do, and Teach Others What You Know

Fourth, I have always sincerely cared about the people I serve, sometimes to a fault. But, I truly love people, and I love how I feel when I watch them wake up and successfully apply the principles and strategies I have taught them. I love what I do, and I love the people for whom I do it.

I want to leave you with a bit of homework to complete. Make a list of all of the things that make you feel the most joyful and alive. What are the common elements of these experiences? Can you figure out a way to make a living doing those things?

How I Lost 22 Pounds in 8 Weeks

Confession: this isn’t exactly what I look like without a shirt on. 😉

Four powerful strategies I used to stay motivated and hit my weight loss goals with maximum ease and minimum effort.

jack-scale2Here we are in February – and I’m very pleased to announce that I have hit my first big goal for 2016!

At the end of last year, I set a goal for myself to lose 22 pounds by the end of January.

When I stepped on the scale on January 31st, I was delighted to discover that I had achieved my goal. I’m down to 199.2 pounds and I look and feel so much better!

How did I do it – beyond the obvious methods of eating less and exercising more?

Here are four powerful strategies I used to stay motivated even in the face of temptation:

1.  I made the conscious decision to lead by example

As someone who is always encouraging others to become their best selves and create their ideal lives, I know that I must lead by example and use my own life to demonstrate that the principles I teach really WORK.

When I looked at myself in the mirror last year and considered how the extra weight I had gained over the past few years was impacting my health and energy levels, I realized that I needed to make some tweaks to my behavior in order to get back to being the best possible Jack I could be.  

After all, I want you to do as I DO, not as I say!

2.  I set big consequences for myself

As you may know, I believe strongly in the importance of setting consequences – so to give myself extra motivation to stay on track, I told all the students in my Train the Trainer class, plus my entire staff and volunteer team that were at the event, that if I didn’t meet my goal, I would throw a lavish dinner party for them at my personal home this Spring.

Now, don’t get me wrong – I love socializing. But to throw such a big party for so many people in my own home, and especially right in the middle of my busy training and speaking season? It definitely would not have been ideal timing, hence a consequence that was an effective motivator.

3.  I made myself accountable to others

No man is an island, they say – and this is definitely true for me. I always find it easier to reach my goals when I have a team of people cheering me on. So I informed my friends and family about my weight loss goal and asked them to hold me accountable, and also told my fans and followers on social media. By announcing my goal and making it public, I felt far more obligated to follow through on it.

4. I quit drinking for 30 days

You may have noticed that last month I announced the release of my latest book, The 30-Day Sobriety Solution. As part of the launch, I decided to use the resources within the program to complete 30 days of sobriety and reset my relationship with alcohol.

I am by no means a heavy drinker, but over the holidays I did get into the habit of enjoying a couple of glasses of wine with dinner, and I knew that habit wasn’t serving my weight loss goals (Did you know that a single class of wine has 125 calories, and that a regular can of beer can have 150 calories? Those can add up quickly!).

I really feel that spending 30 days alcohol-free helped me feel energized and on purpose and played a big role in helping me lose weight. I’m sure I’ll enjoy the occasional glass of wine again in the future, but I no longer feel inclined to have one or two glasses every night – and the boost in energy and self-confidence I’m enjoying as a result of not drinking is very noticeable.

The Power of Asking

I was recently having lunch with my team and loved a story that one of them was telling about the power of Asking.  I thought this would be a great one to share with you all for inspiration!

From Teresa: 

“I was in the process of having an old pair of diamond earrings redesigned and repurposed by my local jeweler.  It was a creative and careful venture, but it did cost a fair amount to work with the jeweler on this.  Although I had a balance pending, I was delighted to do it as a small investment to bring something old to something sparkly and new.  7 days later, I got the call the earrings were ready for pick up!  Before I was about to drive to the jeweler to pick up the earrings, I realized I had another diamond necklace and diamond earrings sitting my jewelery drawer that I never wore.  They were gifts from a broken relationship and only brought sad memories for me, therefore I would never wear them and I kept them in their boxes at the bottom of the drawer.  These two pieces were purchased by this jeweler and they were still very beautiful.  I asked myself, “if I returned these pieces, I wonder if the jeweler might take them back and give me a modest credit to reduce the balance of my newly renovated earrings”  But just at that moment, a feeling of fear and doubt flashed before me, and I started to ask “what if that’s corny and cheap and looks a little desperate.  What if they say no way!!  I’ve had these pieces for years and now I want a selfish credit in return, who do I think I am asking for such a request?”   I had to sing Jack’s mantra “oh what the heck go for it anyway!!”  A silly fearful thought almost caused me to talk myself out of asking a small question to my jeweler.  What if I asked and the jeweler said no, we don’t do that?  Big Deal!!  What if he says YES!!

I went to the jeweler with the 2 pieces and asked his daughter who works for him, if they might take them back and if there’s a chance for a credit to reduce the balance on the diamond earrings—there I did it!  Sure enough the jeweler said “sorry, no we don’t do that on labor and repairs, you still owe for the balance.”  I smiled and paid the balance and felt good that I asked, it was over.  After the bill was settled, the jeweler asked if she could examine the 2 pieces I brought and to look up my file.  She said “I’d like to talk to my father about your credit.”  Credit!!  what?!!!  I thought you don’t give credit on returned jewelery.  She said “we don’t on repairs and labor, however we might still be able to give you a credit in the store, let me see what I can do.”   Her father looked at me and waved from across the room and smiled, he owned the store.  She came back and said “we love you and love your business, he’s giving you $2000 credit on anything in the store, in fact the necklace you really liked last year is still available”  What!!??  I did have my eye on a beautiful necklace last year but never took it seriously that I would ever own it, although I had always wondered about that necklace in my mind it didn’t seem a reality at the time!  That day was a blessing and small miracle, I walked out not only with my earrings but a beautiful, new necklace and still have credit at their store to use.  It’s as if a new chapter has started and a little gift from God to remind me that it’s okay to ask, no matter what the fear, a door will be opened no matter what the outcome.  Courage is strengthened and that will carry you through the times when it matters the most!”

Success Principle #17: Ask! Ask! Ask!

Take time now to make a list of the things that you want that you don’t ask for at home, school, or work. Next to each one, write down how you stop yourself from asking.  What is your fear?  Next, write down what it is costing you not to ask.  Then write down what benefit you would get if you were to ask.  Then get out there and start asking!

Don’t assume that you are going to get a no.  Take the risk to ask for whatever you need and want.  If someone says no, you are no worse off than when you started.  If someone says yes, you are a lot better off.  Just by being willing to ask, you can get a raise, a donation, a room with an ocean view, a discount, a free sample, a date, a better assignment, the order, time off, help with the housework, etc.  Teresa’s example above is such a wonderful example of the power of Asking.
